What should I be looking for when in self-storage?
Security is critical. Most indoor storage will have good security as the storage is contained in a building. Container storage needs to be fenced in, alarmed and CCTV. I haven't used storage before and I'm not sure what size I need.
Most indoor storage sites have diagrams showing their various sized units and a description of how much they can store.
Shipping Containers are usually 3m, 6m and 12m. Boxed Up Storage has 6m containers which has enough space to store the contents of a normal three-bedroom house.

Is a 20ft container too big for my storage?
Container storage is significantly cheaper, so it is tempting to rent one. It is likely once you have a large space at your disposal, you will use it.

Will my contents go mouldy in a container?
It is highly unlikely belongings will go mouldy in container storage as long as it is dry. Please read our Mould section to explain why it happens and how to avoid it.

Do I need power in my storage container?
It is not necessary to have electricity in a container, but it is useful if tools need charging, if a light is required or operating a dehumidifier if there is a concern the stored items are damp. This can happen if the container is loaded in the rain.  Two weeks with a dehumidifier should be sufficient time to remove most of the moisture.

Can my builder organise storage?
There is no reason why a builder cannot hire storage on your behalf. They are likely to put on a margin to make profit on the transaction. If you hire the storage, you are not on a deadline to remove your items, possibly giving you more time for decorating.

When and how often can I get into my storage?
When will depend on the store company but indoor storage are usually 7 days a week and about 10 to 13 hours opening. Container can be similar or if they give you alarm and entry access than possibly 14 hours. It is usually capped at 22:00 as the site manager will often be alerted when the site is accessed. 
Moving or altering your home and you need a safe place to store your possessions. Our insulated 6m containers store the contents of an average three-bedroom house.

There should be no charge or limit to how often you access your stored possessions. If there is, there are many other storage companies.

Is it important for containers to be on a hard base?
Container storage has boomed in the last decade. Many farms and unused land have had containers placed, and businesses started up. If the ground is compact mud you, your car and possibly your possessions are going to get muddy on rainy days. The storage container is more likely to be infested with ants and other small insects. A company that has invested in a concrete yard has made a bigger investment to avoid these problems, and that might suggests other services less noticeable qualities like security are also better.
