Advantages

Security
Many indoor storage facilities combine controlled building access with CCTV, alarms and other site security measures.

Protection from the Weather
Because the units are inside a building, customers and their belongings are protected from rain and other weather while loading and unloading.

Some facilities also provide specialist climate-controlled units for belongings that are particularly sensitive to changes in temperature or humidity.

Convenience
Many indoor facilities provide trolleys, lifts and extended access hours.

Wide Range of Sizes
Indoor facilities often offer a wide choice of unit sizes, from small lockers to much larger storage rooms.

Disadvantages

Higher Cost
Indoor storage can be more expensive. A 160 sq ft container can be ⅓ of the price of a similar indoor space.

Lightweight Internal Construction
Some indoor storage rooms use lightweight partition systems rather than the heavy steel construction of a shipping container. Security therefore depends on both the individual unit and the overall security of the building.

Potential Cross-Unit Pest Risk
Because neighbouring indoor units may share walls, ceilings or other internal spaces, pests can potentially move between different parts of a building if an infestation occurs.

Access Logistics
Depending on the location of your unit, you may need to move belongings through entrances, corridors, doors or lifts.

Limited Drive-Up Access
Direct vehicle access is normally limited to certain ground-floor units, where it is available at all.

Container storage generally uses 20ft or 40ft steel shipping containers located within secure outdoor compounds.

Shipping containers are manufactured from heavy-gauge steel and designed to withstand demanding transport conditions while carrying heavy loads.

A 20ft container provides a substantial individual storage area and is particularly suitable for household contents, furniture, tools, equipment and business stock.

Each container is a separate heavy-duty steel structure rather than part of a shared internal partition system.

Reduced Cross-Unit Pest Risk

Disadvantages

Temperature and Moisture Changes
Standard uninsulated steel containers can experience larger temperature changes and may be more vulnerable to condensation if moisture is not properly controlled.

Containers are normally located outdoors, so the quality of the site, security and maintenance are important.

You may also need to load or access your belongings during poor weather, although direct vehicle access can reduce the distance items have to be carried.

Limited Choice of Unit Sizes
Container storage is generally offered in larger standard sizes, so it may not be the most economical option if you only need a very small amount of storage space.

Which Type of Storage Should You Choose?

Neither indoor storage nor container storage is automatically better. The best choice depends on what you are storing and the quality of the individual storage facility.

Indoor self storage can be particularly useful if you need a small unit, want completely covered access or require specialist climate-controlled storage.

Container storage generally offers more space for the money, straightforward vehicle access and is particularly well suited to furniture, household contents, equipment and business stock.

When comparing storage facilities, look beyond whether the unit is indoors or in a container. Security, insulation, moisture control, cleanliness and ease of access can make a much greater difference to how well your belongings are protected.
